What to Expect This National Day Parade

GeneralJune 20, 2024 10:00

Welcome to the second part of our three-part series on Singapore’s National Day Parade (NDP) 2024! In this instalment, we will explore the significant changes and new highlights that make this year’s NDP unique. With new leadership and innovative features, NDP 2024 is set to be a memorable event.

Change in Prime Minister

This year’s parade will be the first for Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. As he steps into his role, there will be heightened interest and anticipation around his address to the nation. PM Wong is expected to outline his vision for Singapore’s future, focusing on unity, resilience, and progress.

Change in President

NDP 2024 will also be the first parade for President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Known for his extensive experience in politics and international affairs, President Tharman’s presence will bring a renewed sense of leadership and inspiration to the event. His inaugural address is anticipated to highlight themes of inclusivity and social cohesion.

Theme and Logo

The theme for NDP 2024 is “Together, As One United People,” emphasising the collective strength and unity of Singaporeans. The logo creatively combines “SG” and “59” to symbolise 59 years of independence, with five stars representing democracy, peace, progress, justice, and equality.

Total Defence 40th Anniversary

This year also marks the 40th anniversary of Total Defence, a concept that involves all Singaporeans in building a strong, secure, and cohesive nation. To commemorate this, the parade will feature a dynamic defence display, showcasing the coordinated efforts of the Singapore Armed Forces, Police Force, and Civil Defence Force in responding to various threats.

Extended Celebrations

For the first time, the NDP celebrations will extend to the Promontory @ Marina Bay, allowing more people to participate in the festivities. This extension includes:

  • Live Performances: Enjoy stage performances and the live telecast of the NDP at the Padang.
  • Fireworks: Spectacular displays lighting up Marina Bay.
  • Maritime and Aerial Displays: Watch the coordinated displays live, including a sail-past featuring the Presidential Gun Salute.

Heartland Celebrations

On 10th August, the celebrations will continue in five heartland areas, bringing the festivities closer to residents. These events will include:

  • Community Performances: Showcasing local talents and cultural acts.
  • Static Displays: Featuring SAF, SCDF, and SPF vehicles.
  • Carnival Activities: Family-friendly activities and fireworks displays.

Virtual Participation

For those unable to attend in person, there are virtual engagement activities leading up to National Day. Campaigns like #GiveAsOneSG and #TogetherAsOneSG encourages Singaporeans to volunteer and celebrate together, fostering a sense of community and national pride.

Conclusion

NDP 2024 promises to be a unique and memorable celebration, with significant changes in leadership and extended festivities. These changes reflect Singapore’s commitment to unity, resilience, and inclusivity, ensuring that everyone can participate in and enjoy the celebrations.
