Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong delivered the National Day Rally speech on August 20, 2023, at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) Headquarters. The rally covered a range of important topics, from the country's response to the COVID-19 pandemic to economic outlook, retirement planning, healthcare, and future directions for the nation. For Singapore companies and workers, several key points emerged that have implications for their future:

1. Return to Normalcy:

PM Lee began by acknowledging the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and expressed relief that the crisis was behind them. He commended Singaporeans for their resilience, unity, and effective response to the pandemic, highlighting that Singapore emerged stronger from the ordeal.

2. Global Situation and Economic Outlook:

PM Lee discussed the challenges posed by geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, and rising global prices. For Singapore companies, this highlights the importance of adaptability and resilience in the face of changing international dynamics. Businesses should remain agile and seek out new opportunities, such as those emerging in the digital economy.

3. Jobs and Skills:

PM Lee highlighted the need for workers to continuously upgrade their skills, especially as job disruptions are expected to increase. For Singapore workers, this emphasises the importance of embracing lifelong learning and proactively acquiring new skills that align with evolving industries. The government's efforts to provide financial support for workers undergoing skills training can be a valuable resource.

4. Economic Growth and Support:

Despite global challenges, Singapore is maintaining positive economic growth. The government aims to support workers during these uncertain times. The Forward SG plans include financial support for workers who lose their jobs while upgrading their skills. This temporary safety net will help workers meet immediate needs and focus on long-term skill development.

5. Retirement Support – Majulah Package:

The "Majulah Package" was introduced to address the concerns of Singaporeans approaching retirement. This package aims to help individuals aged 50 and above this year, focusing on those with lower incomes and fewer retirement savings. The package comprises three components:

  • Earn and Save Bonus: Lower- and middle-income workers will receive a CPF bonus of up to $1,000 a year, encouraging them to continue working and building up their CPF savings.
  • Retirement Savings Bonus (RSB): Individuals with CPF balances below the Basic Retirement Sum will receive a one-time CPF bonus of up to $1,500.
  • MediSave Bonus: A one-time MediSave Bonus of up to $1,000 to help cover medical expenses and insurance premiums.

The package aims to provide additional financial security for Singapore workers as they approach retirement.

6. Healthcare and Ageing Population:

PM Lee stressed the importance of active ageing and preventive healthcare. The introduction of the "Healthier SG" initiative encourages individuals to take responsibility for their own health and well-being. For companies, promoting health and well-being programs for employees can lead to a healthier and more productive workforce.

7. Unity and National Identity:

The rally emphasised the importance of unity and mutual trust in Singapore's success. Companies play a role in fostering a sense of community within their workforce, while embracing diversity and promoting shared values. The concept of a strong national identity is also relevant for companies operating in Singapore, as they contribute to the overall fabric of the nation.

8. Political Stability and Integrity:

PM Lee discussed recent events involving political figures and stressed the importance of maintaining a clean and effective political system. For businesses, this underscores the stability of the Singaporean political environment and its focus on integrity. This stability is attractive for businesses looking to operate in a transparent and corruption-free atmosphere.

9. Leadership Renewal and Founding Values:

PM Lee discussed the importance of leadership renewal and succession planning. He assured that his original succession plans, disrupted by the pandemic, are back on track. PM Lee highlighted the enduring values and ideals that underpin Singapore's success, including justice, equality, meritocracy, and honest governance. He stressed the significance of integrity and upholding these values to maintain Singapore's reputation and resilience.

10. Forward Singapore:

PM Lee mentioned the "Forward Singapore" initiative launched by the 4th generation (4G) leadership. This initiative aims to refresh the nation's social compact and address various issues. It includes equipping people with the skills to succeed, improving care for the vulnerable, and strengthening unity among Singaporeans. The Forward Singapore report is expected to provide guidance for navigating through challenges.

In summary, the National Day Rally 2023 addressed various issues of significance to Singapore companies and workers. The emphasis on resilience, continuous learning, retirement planning, and health aligns with the country's commitment to creating a vibrant, inclusive, and forward-looking society.
